Experience Umbria
Umbria, known as the Green Heart of Italy is the only totally land locked region in Italy.
Lago di Trasimeno is Italy’s fourth largest lake and it has several islands. One of these, Isola Maggiore, which has a castle and a population of only thirty-five inhabitants , is certainly worth a visit.
Perugia is a fascinating city. Prior to the Unification of Italy in 1871, the regions were all independent states and Umbria was one of the Papal States. The fact that the Pope was a powerful secular leader during their 1000-year existence is underlined by the huge castle in the city. Perugia is also well known for its chocolate, Baci, which means kisses.
Assisi is one of Umbria’s most visited cities and many of its buildings are designated as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The impressive 13th century Basilica di Santa Chiara with its impressive Romanesque facade contains the tomb of St Francis and also features many fascinating frescoes and paintings.
